Who this decision is for
- A consumer brand sold through resellers in Korea whose brand-name searches show marketplace listings and unofficial blogs above any official page.
- A company whose Korean customers spell the name several different ways, splitting mentions and leaving no clear Korean brand identity.
- A brand manager who found a lookalike site or account using the name and needs to understand the search side of the problem.
- An overseas firm launching in Korea that wants its official presence ready before the first press or distributor mentions appear.
The decision to make
The decision is how actively to manage brand-name results, and which name forms to treat as official. Koreans may search the English name, a Hangul transliteration, a shortened form or a phonetic guess. Each can produce different results on Naver and Google. You must choose the primary Korean form, then decide how much effort to spend on the variants people actually use.
The trade-off is control versus cost. Owning the first page of results for brand terms is more achievable than owning category terms, but it still requires official pages, profiles and consistent references over time. Marketplaces, resellers and fans may legitimately appear too. SWIN focuses on making the official source clear and accurate; disputes over trademarks or impersonation should be handled by qualified Korean counsel, not marketing tactics.
Options compared
| Option | Best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Official Korean site plus profile claims | Brand has little Korean presence and needs an authoritative result for its Hangul and Latin names. | Takes time to be recognized; unclaimed or inconsistent profiles elsewhere can still outrank you for a while. |
| Variant-based naming program | Customers use several spellings and you need one primary Korean name with redirects, mentions and support for the alternates. | Choosing a name without linguistic and legal review can create confusion or conflict with existing marks. |
| Monitoring and escalation routine | Brand already has partners, resellers and fans mentioning it, and the risk is misinformation or impersonation. | Monitoring finds issues but cannot remove content; takedown or legal steps require counsel and platform processes. |
Risks to manage
- Transliteration split. If customers write the name in several Hangul spellings, search visibility and reviews fragment. Decide the primary form, use it consistently, and mention common variants on official pages where natural.
- Reseller pages outranking official pages. Marketplace and distributor content may dominate name searches. Publish a clear official Korean page and coordinate naming and claims with partners so results do not conflict.
- Unofficial or lookalike accounts. Others may create pages using your name. Audit regularly, claim official profiles early, and involve Korean counsel for anything that looks like infringement or impersonation.
- Name conflicts in Korea. An existing Korean business may already use a similar name. Have counsel check before promoting a Hangul name widely, because rebranding later costs far more than checking first.
Evidence to gather first
- Screenshots of Naver and Google results for the English name, candidate Hangul spellings, common misspellings and the name plus words like official, review and price.
- A list of every known Korean use of your name: distributors, marketplaces, media, blogs, social accounts and any unofficial profiles.
- A record of which names and spellings your Korean customers, staff and partners already use in conversation and messages.
- Confirmation from Korean counsel on trademark status and permitted name forms before the primary Korean brand name is promoted.
Recommended process
- Brand query audit. SWIN searches every name variant on Naver and Google and records the results, noting which are official, partner, third-party or misleading. You share every spelling customers, partners and staff already use.
- Name standardization. With your team and counsel, we settle a primary Hangul form and an English pairing, and document acceptable variants for writers and partners. Counsel confirms the chosen forms are safe before they are promoted.
- Official presence build. SWIN prepares the Korean brand page content, claims relevant profiles and aligns descriptions so official results agree with each other. Descriptions, links and logos are made to agree across every official location.
- Partner alignment. We give distributors and resellers a naming guide so their pages use the same name forms and link to the official source. Partners receive the guide together with a request to link to the official page.
- Ongoing watch. We agree a routine to check brand queries and flag issues, escalating legal matters to your counsel rather than handling them ourselves. Any suspected infringement goes to your counsel with SWIN's dated evidence.
